With our Brexit event just around the corner, we felt it fitting that one of our wonderful panel speakers for the event would be this week's inspiring individual (If you haven't yet signed up for this event, click here to snap up one of the last few remaining tickets).

Sam Pickering is a Partner at Incendium, a Corporate Real Estate consultancy firm that works closely with clients to address their business challenges and ensure they succeed in a modern and fast evolving world.

Thanks for taking the time to speak to us today Sam, could you start by telling us a bit about how you came to the property industry and your current role?

I joined the property industry as a post graduate having previously flown helicopters within the
British Army for 10 years. I did a post graduate in building surveying before specialising in sustainability, starting my own consultancy in London and Qatar. Following this success, I moved to CBRE as head of energy and sustainability within the GWS business, before joining Incendium as head of Resilience 18 months ago. I am also soon to be President of the CoreNet Global UK Chapter.

In your opinion, what is an important development or theme that will shape the future
of the property industry?

Technology will shape every aspect of property moving forward, be it transactions, operations or the way we interact with the buildings that we work within. Property has a whole has not had its ‘disruption’ moment but change is coming which will be enabled by technology.

What advice would you give to a young person starting out in the industry?

In my view technology will drive change but your network will be the key part of your success. Make sure you get out and about, to meet as many people as you can. Property provides numerous opportunities so learning and working with others is crucial to your future success.

Who is a person that inspires you and why?

I have a friend called Kirsten who is CEO of a business called Compass Lexicon, an economics consultancy which is part of FTI a global organisation. She has worked on some of the largest &As within EMEA and risen to the top. She has achieved this in an industry that is very male dominated, where the majority come from private school and Oxbridge graduates – she is none of these and also has two brilliant children. She has shown what can be achieved based on being great at what you do and also a lovely person. In her spare time she is a leadership coach, who mentors the future generation and gives all her associated fees to charity – Just brilliant!

We can't wait to hear more from Sam at our next event "Brexit: What does it mean for you?" on 26th July at DLA Piper.
